PRP Treatment in Antalya

PRP assessment in Antalya for selected cases of joint osteoarthritis, persistent tendon symptoms and sports injuries.

PRP in Antalya: Platelet-Rich Plasma for Selected Joint and Tendon Conditions

Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is prepared by processing a sample of the patient's own blood to concentrate platelets in plasma. Platelets contain growth factors involved in the body's response to injury. The preparation is injected into a selected treatment site. At Dr. Serap Erkeç Alkan's clinic in Antalya, PRP may be discussed for certain musculoskeletal conditions after assessment. Its effect varies by diagnosis and preparation, and it does not guarantee tissue regeneration or lasting pain relief.

What Is PRP Treatment?

PRP is a biologic treatment considered for some joint and tendon conditions. Its proposed effects relate to substances released by platelets, but the evidence and expected benefits differ between conditions.

How PRP Is Intended to Work

Conditions for Which PRP May Be Considered

PRP is used in selected orthopaedic, sports medicine and rehabilitation settings. Suitability requires an individual assessment.

Joint Osteoarthritis

PRP is sometimes considered for joint pain, particularly knee osteoarthritis.

Treatment focus: It may help pain and function in some patients, but results vary and cartilage restoration is not established. Its role in hip or shoulder osteoarthritis should be discussed separately rather than assumed to be the same as for the knee.

Persistent Tendon Conditions (Tendinopathy)

Persistent tendon pain may involve degenerative changes and reduced tolerance to load.

Examples assessed include:

  • Achilles tendinopathy: Persistent pain or thickening of the Achilles tendon.

  • Tennis and golfer's elbow: Pain at the forearm tendon attachments.

  • Patellar tendinopathy: Pain in the tendon below the kneecap.

Sports Injuries and Ligament Problems

Some partial injuries may be assessed for PRP alongside rehabilitation.

Examples discussed include:

  • Partial rotator cuff tears that are suitable for non-surgical care

  • Selected partial knee or ankle ligament injuries

  • Muscle injuries, such as hamstring or quadriceps strains, where the potential role and uncertain benefits require discussion

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is PRP safe, and are there side effects?

Using the patient's own blood reduces some compatibility concerns, but PRP is not risk-free. Temporary soreness, swelling or bruising can occur, and injection risks include bleeding or infection. Sterile technique and appropriate assessment reduce but do not eliminate risk.

2. Does PRP regrow cartilage in knee osteoarthritis?

PRP is not established as a way to regrow joint cartilage. It may help pain and function in some patients with knee osteoarthritis, but the response varies and structural repair should not be promised.

3. What should I do after PRP, and when can I exercise?

Follow the instructions for your treatment site. A short period of reduced loading may be advised before a gradual return to activity. Ask about pain relief and your usual medicines; do not change prescribed treatment on your own.

4. Is PRP better than a corticosteroid injection for tendon pain?

Not in every situation. The diagnosis, treatment goal, risks and evidence matter. Corticosteroids may offer short-term relief in selected conditions, while PRP has a different rationale and variable evidence. Neither should be described as universally superior.

5. Can PRP and prolotherapy be used together?

They may be considered together in selected cases, but each procedure needs a clear indication. A combined approach does not guarantee better healing or lasting relief, and additional cost and risks should be discussed.
